Common Terminologies of Expanded Metal Sheet
Some of the simple and common terms used to describe expanded metal sheets are briefly covered below. These terms are useful to know when choosing and ordering expanded metal sheets.
Raised expanded metal has a slightly raised surface, which can provide better anti-slip performance. Additionally, it can add additional strength and rigidity to the expanded metal sheet.
- Thickness
Thickness is the actual measurement of the thickness of the mesh material measured at the knuckle.
- Stand Width
Strand width is the feed length of the material that passes through the press at each of the downward shearing or pressing operations. It is the measurement that is perpendicular to the material thickness.
- SWD
SWD is the distance from a point on a knuckle to a corresponding point on the following knuckle measured across the short way of the diamond-shaped hole. This distance is also sometimes called a "pitch".
- SWO
SWD is the short distance between mesh inner opening.
- LWD
LWD is the distance from a point on a knuckle to a corresponding point on the following knuckle measured over the long way of the diamond-shaped hole. This distance is also sometimes called a "pitch".
- LWO
LWO is the long distance between mesh inner opening.
- Open Areas
Each expanded metal mesh pattern has a different percentage of open area, which can be modified to provide economical shading and ventilation and to suit individual client requirements. Open area is the number of perforations or holes in a given area and is often conveyed as a percentage. It influences the visual appearance and physical performance of expanded metal mesh.
